Description: A young nyala in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi game reserve, S. Africa, March 2018. Just before we left the game reserve, we stopped for a short break. There was a family of nyalas nearby. In the absence of predators in the immediate vicinity, these mammals feel secure and are often seen in the area. In addition, as they are used to seeing humans, they did not run away when the vehicles approached. We were in a location where we could leave the safari vehicles. I got off the vehicle and took some shots. This shot tuned out to be the best of the lot. It was late afternoon, so unless the animals were in direct sunlight (and some of them were), the light was soft. I have some shots of the young nyala with its mama. But those shots do not work. In my excitement, I did not adjust the aperture to accommodate both animals (one was horizontal while the other diagonal to my camera). The young animal is in focus, the older is not. They are souvenir shots! ---I like the backlit ears of the animal. the green curvature in the background and the tree trunk. I sharpened the image very slightly with Topaz detail, then reduced the opacity to under 30% and masked the out of focus parts.
