Okay, so let’s just cut to the chase and address Okay, so let’s just cut to the chase and address the elephant in the room; “yes this is a ‘corny’ portrait!” and now that we got that out of the way, let’s talk about the compositional power of all that corn, corn that is a combination of vivid color and texture, a pattern of corn that is ‘disrupted’ by the introduction of a subject that clearly does not fit the pattern, in effect, the woman is now the ‘preacher’ surrounded by the ‘choir’. We had a great time in my recent Chicago workshop, We had a great time in my recent Chicago workshop, and although it felt at times bitterly cold, Crown Fountain was running at full strength and there was no shortage of subjects, albeit not in summer attire, where one could create splendid compositions of light and color in combination with the silhouetted human form/shape to add some welcomed personality to the overall scene. The coming together of both backlight and front-light is quite possibly the most positively lethal and exposure opportunity that one can come across and here are three examples, along with a brief video, to afford you some additional insight into understanding the exposure dynamic as well as the graphic portrayal of these compositions, all of which were shot in camera with my Nikon D500 and Nikkor 18-300mm, at the 240-300mm range.

It’s almost every week, somewhere in the world, It’s almost every week, somewhere in the world, that I’m either out with a group of photographers or I happen to be in the area where a group of photographers are hanging out, so it makes sense that should have a fairly good collection of compositions showcases photographers, as a group, and it was a year or so ago, that I came upon a group of photographers who were setting up against the vast backdrop of a blue sky filled with various textures of white/grey clouds, but a shot, none the less that made me feel something was missing..and as much as I’d like to say that a small pond or large puddle of water was before them, I cannot, but rather I will gladly volunteer that I made a duplicate of the single vertical exposure, then flipped that duplicate upside down and with the aid of the Canvas Tool in PS, I was able to ‘join’ the two images together, resulting in the ‘mirror” image you see here. That ‘missing’ something had now been ‘found’. So, it’s not a pond, not a puddle, not even a lake, but just some beginner photoshop trickery that made for a magical image.

Enjoy, and you keep shooting!

If contrast is your thing, then here is the perfec If contrast is your thing, then here is the perfect ‘storm’; remember the last time you photographed a sunset/sunrise and anything or anyone in front of the sunrise/sunset was rendered a silhouette? The reason for that was simple; the background (the sunset/sunrise) was far brighter than the subjects that stood/sat/ran/jumped/walked in front of it and ESPECIALLY when your camera is in AUTO/PROGRAM/APERTURE PRIORITY MODE, it will always set an exposure for the brightest area, and render most everything else that is NOT illuminated in that same brightness value as a silhouette!

Here are five examples where the exposure was PURPOSELY set for the much brighter background, thus assuring myself that any subject that was in the shade and in front of this brightness would record as a silhouette against the much welcomed contrast of a much brighter background-the perfect storm!

My intent was simple enough; compose a composition My intent was simple enough; compose a composition of LINES, lines in this case that would be comprised of vertical trees that lined a narrow country lane in West Friesland Holland, vertical lines against the solid blue color of the northern sky, a blue sky in marked contrast to the long horizontal RED line composed near the bottom third of the frame, oh my, and with the subtle, albeit small, bonus of a lone yellow mustard plant; not a ‘trifecta’ of color, these three, red, yellow and blue, but rather a composition (2nd Image) of TRIADEC color, (three colors that form a triangle on the color wheel when a line is drawn from one to the other)...seconds had only past, several exposures were already made when the loud roar and rumbling sound of a once distant vehicle could be heard to my left, a farm vehicle perhaps, but oh my, coming into view, quickly, it is an unexpected HUGE farm vehicle, an “almost too wide” for this narrow road vehicle, an as it enters the frame “you keep shooting”, and WHOOSH, a welcomed industrial strength brushstroke of color brings an energy dynamic into an otherwise perhaps too quiet, too ‘lazy’ of a composition that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. Three cheers for the unplanned, the unexpected!!! #earthfocus #photographyislife #red #picoftheday #nikonownersmagazine #ig_color #artisoninstagram #bryanfpetersonphotoworkshops #youkeepshooting #photooftheday #photographytips #nature #Holland #train #hoorn #blur
